Hosted Exchange 2013

Almost two years ago I wrote a couple of blog posts regarding Hosted Exchange 2010 SP2 (or later):

When building Hosted Exchange 2013 things are not very different. You have to prepare Active Directory for hosting purposes and set the permissions in Active Directory on OU level. When it comes to Exchange 2013 itself, address list segregation is still achieved by using Address Book Policies. One thing that is fundamentally different is SMTP routing in a hosted Exchange. In Exchange 2010 3rd party Routing Agents were used, but in Exchange 2013 there’s an Address Book Policy Routing agent that respects the Address Book Policies that are provisioned for every tenant. Building Hosted Exchange – Part II

In my previous blog post I tried to explain why Microsoft is following the partner model for hosted environment. If you fully understand the Microsoft guidance document and really want to build it yourself instead of using a 3rd party Control Panel vendor (which I always recommend) I’ll try to outline the various steps that need to be done.

Please note that this blog post is published ‘as is’ and is my personal belief on how stuff can be done. You still have to test everything in a lab environment before building things in production. I cannot, will not nor take any responsibility about your environment when things go wrong!

Exchange Schema Versies

Every Exchange version comes with its own Active Directory Schema updates, even Cumulative Updates come with Schema updates these days. To determin the version of the Schema when it comes to Exchange you can verify the rangeUpper property of the ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt object in the Schema Partition as shown in the following figure (for Exchange 2013 CU8).

You can also use the following PowerShell commands to retrieve the Schema version:

$root = [ADSI]"LDAP://RootDSE"
$m = [ADSI]("LDAP://" + "CN=ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt," + $root.schemaNamingContext)
$m.rangeUpper

The following table lists all (or most) Schema versions of Exchange Server:
