Lync Hosting Pack v2 Summit

This week I’m attending the Lync Hosting Pack (LHP) V2 summit in Washington DC. The Lync Hosting Pack is Microsoft’s solution for hosters to offer a fully multi-tenant Lync solution. The summit is a joint development between Microsoft and implement.com.

The solution is based on one Active Directory, but every customer has its own Organizational Unit, fully separated from other OU’s, thus preventing information leakage. LHPv2 itself is based on Lync Server 2013. Continue reading Lync Hosting Pack v2 Summit

Installing Lync 2013 CU1

Microsoft has recently announced the availability of Cumulative Update 1 (CU1) for Lync Server 2013 which can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809243. I have never installed a CU update on Lync before, so I was curious to see how this works.

CU1 contains of 9 different fixes that need to be deployed, depending on the server roles that are installed on the various boxes. There’s a nice little update installer you can use to make life easier.

Lync Phone Edition Updates

When using Lync Phone Edition you might want to upgrade to Lync client on these phones when they become available. The distribution method for this is via the network (of course).

The update process is as follows:

  1. Downloaden from Microsoft update;
  2. Upload the update to the Lync Server;
  3. Approve the update;
  4. Auto install of the client software on the device.

Step 1 is to download the appropriate updates when they are available. For the Microsoft Lync Phone Edition for Polycom CX500, Polycom CX600 and Polycom CX300 they can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23866, but there are also updates available for Microsoft Lync Phone Edition for Polycom CX700 en LG-Nortel IP Phone 8540 or for Microsoft Lync Phone Edition for Aastra 6721ip en Aastra 6725ip.

Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 Unified Messaging

In earlier blog posts I’ve written how to install Exchange 2013 and in another series of blog posts I’ve written how to install Lync Server 2013, including connectivity with a SIP trunk provider using a Lync 2013 mediation server.

The last and most exciting part (and least used I’m afraid) is to connect the two platforms into the Exchange 2013 Unified Messaging server role. If a call cannot be answered it’s rerouted into the Exchange server’s UM role where a voicemail can be recorded. This voicemail is then delivered into the user’s mailbox.

Publish Lync 2013 Services in TMG 2010

In an earlier blog post I explained how to setup a Lync 2013 environment with a Front-End server and an Edge Server. This way you can use Lync 2013 internally and externally, including federation with other Lync 2010/2013 or OCS 2007 R2 organizations. You also might want to implement publishing rules on your Threat Management Server (TMG) 2010 to implement the following additional services:

  • Enabling external users to download meeting content for your meetings.
  • Enabling external users to expand distribution groups.
  • Enabling remote users to download files from the Address Book service.
  • Accessing the Microsoft Lync Web App client.
  • Accessing the Dial-in Conferencing Settings webpage.
  • Accessing the Location Information service.
  • Enabling external devices to connect to Device Update web service and obtain updates.
